In the central African nation of Cameroon, being identified as gay is punishable by up to five years in prison. BORN THIS WAY closely follows the stories of Cedric and Gertrude, each facing the challenge of being open with their loved ones, especially their mother figures, as well as lawyer-activist Alice Knom. Because of strict laws, the filmmakers opted to film guerilla-style, hiding in plain sight, like many of their subjects, and they were able to capture the courageous lives of ordinary gay and lesbian Cameroonians: underground dance parties, the work of the LGBT center, and a tense courtroom scene.
