Starlite, New York’s first black-owned gay bar, opened in Brooklyn in 1962 during the highly charged civil rights era. It became a safe haven for LGBT people living outside Manhattan, and in the ’70s, it played disco before anyplace else. But after nearly 50 years in business, the lounge received a 30-day eviction notice from the new building owners in the ever-more-pricey Crown Heights neighborhood.
